On Our Easel – August 5, 2016

Here are some of the things that have been on CHF’s easel over the past two weeks:

  • SUCCESS IS A NUMBERS GAME. Coach Rahti Gorfien tells artists they need to pick up the phone if they want to lay the groundwork for future sales. “Whether you’re in the business of making art or selling cars,” she writes, “slowdowns occur because of what you’ve done—or haven’t done—in the days and months leading up to that slump.”
  • ASK THE ARTISTS. CHF launches a new artist Q&A feature in our e-learning portal. We’ll be reaching out regularly to established working artists to ask them how they handle the nuts and bolts of their businesses. This month, our group of well-known artists weighs in on when to raise prices, and how to respond to galleries that won’t work with you if you require a contract.
  • TAKING THE PLUNGE INTO FINE ART. In a recent episode of our Thriving Artist Podcast, CHF 2015 grant recipient Leslie Hirst talks about the challenges of transitioning from commercial art to fine art, and the importance of maintaining a brand identity. “Every work that you create should extend into the next thing that you do.”
  • SPREAD THE WORD. Do you know any visual artists who need help with the business side of their enterprises? Let them know that CHF will soon begin accepting applications for our innovative 2017 Business Accelerator Program. Participants receive one-on-one guidance from our team of art-industry experts, as well as free tuition to our year-long interactive business workshop series. Plus, up to ten artists in the program shall be awarded a CHF Business Accelerator Grant. For more information, visit our program page, and pre-register now to receive email reminders about applying.
